PLEASE NOTE THAT ANCESTRY.COM FAMILY TREES AND FAMILY TREES CREATED BY OTHER RESEARCHERS ALONE ARE NOT PROOF AS A CONNECTION TO A CONFEDERATE ANCESTOR.
THEY ARE OFTEN SO FULL OF ERRORS THAT THEY ALONE CANNOT BE TRUSTED NO MATTER WHAT ANYONE MAY THINK, OR TELL YOU.
TAKE THE TIME TO CONDUCT YOUR OWN RESEARCH.
IT WILL THEN BE MUCH MORE REWARDING

OFFICIAL DOCUMENTATION IS REQUIRED. PLEASE READ FURTHER BELOW.

I ALSO RECOMMEND AN AUTOSOMAL DNA TEST AT 23ANDME, ANCESTRYDNA, OR BOTH, TO HELP CONFIRM THAT FAMILY LINES, PAPER TRAIL RESEARCH AND FAMILY ORAL HISTORY IS CORRECT.

All membership applications and genealogies are approved at the camp level only.

A membership application may be printed off the national website by clicking on the following link:

Required paper work is as follows :

1. Your ancestor(s) service and pension (If he applied) record.

Your ancestor(s) MUST have served honorably. He must not have been a deserter, switched sides and loyalty, or took the oath before the final surrender.
Exception: If his record shows he deserted at some time during his service, it MUST show that he later returned & served honorably during his remaining time in the service. Some men who were captured were listed as "deserted" for a time when in fact they were captured & imprisoned. Subsequent records will list him as "captured" or note that he is a POW.

2. Your relationship MUST be documented genealogically from yourself back to your Confederate ancestor.
Copies of birth certificates, death certificates, census records, marriage records, or obituaries can be used to do this.
No online family trees are accepted as proof.

An example:

When I joined I sent in the following:

A copy of my birth certificate with both my name & my father's name highlighted in yellow.
I then sent in a copy of my father's birth certificate with his name & his mother's (my grandmother) highlighted in yellow.
I sent a copy of my grandmother's death certificate with both her name & her mother's (my great grandmother) highlighted in yellow.
A copy of my great grandmother's death certificate with her name & her father's (my great great grandfather) highlighted in yellow.
A copy of my great great grandfather's death certificate with his name & his father's (my great great great grandfather & Confederate Veteran) highlighted in yellow.

I also sent in copies of census records with each name highlighted in yellow.

A copy of his service record.

The above info as submitted allowed a quick & simple approval.

The SCV is an all volunteer organization. An SCV camp is as good as the level of participation of its members. We do have those who volunteer their time to help others join. We are here to honor our Confederate ancestors who are so often vilified in these modern times.
